Transport

The O.R. Tambo International Airport is Africa's busiest airport and, with a capacity to serve up to 28 million passengers annually, it comfortably serves its yearly passenger count exceeding 11 million. It is the country's primary airport for international and domestic flights. The privately owned Lanseria Airport lies just north of Sandton and accommodates regular domestic and international flights.

O.R. Tambo International Airport is an easy 25 to 45 minute (depending on time of day) drive from Sandton and the Gautrain transports passengers between the airport and Sandton in less than 15 minutes. The Gautrain also provides quick and easy access to the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Alternatively, enquire with your accommodation provider about available transfer services.

South Africa boasts a well maintained and signposted network of highways that connect the country's towns and cities. It is easy to reach Sandton by car if you are on a self-drive vacation. There are also a wide variety of car rental agencies operating within Sandton, with pick up and drop off points in the city, the Gautrain station in Sandton and at the O.R. Tambo International Airport.

While minibus taxis regularly travel along predetermined routes, these may not be appropriate for travellers with little experience of the informal South African taxi system. It is advisable to rather opt for the metered taxis that will drop you at your destination's doorstep. While this is a slightly more expensive option, foreign guests will find the reliability reasonably affordable.
